Macmillan is one of the largest British charities and provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer.

Macmillan provide a range of services to help patients get the support they need, and influence the public, frontline services and key decisions makers. Their advocacy work plays a critical part in getting the right care and support for people living with cancer.
Knowing that research plays a vital role in helping us understand how we can best support everyone with cancer to live life as fully as they can, Macmillan are at the forefront of understanding the needs and experiences of people living with cancer through public health data analysis, evaluating services and healthcare economics, conducting surveys, funding academic research and working closely with people affected by cancer and as well as professionals and partners on the ground.
About the role
The Interim Chief People Officer (CPO) will lead the organisation's important people and volunteering agenda to ensure everyone who works with Macmillan can thrive in their roles.
They will sit on the senior leadership team and play a key role in driving the organisation forward for the next 12 months, alongside the of 60, with three direct reports.
There will be a number of key projects to deliver during this period, these include:
- Identifying and delivering a
- During a period of significant change, this appointment will help with the offboarding of several board members including the Chief Executive, whilst also supporting with the successful appointments and onboarding of their successors
- Leading a robust audit on pay, progression and reward
- Implementing Macmillan's strategy to drive equity, diversity and inclusion so that they recruit, retain and develop a diverse workforce for the future
Alongside this, the CPO will oversee and act as an escalation point for employee relations.
The Macmillan Board of Trustees want this role to drive their people agenda forward, innovating and improving how they work so that they can deliver even more for people with cancer. This is not a 'keep the ship steady' role, as demonstrated by some of the ambitious deliverables above.
This role is interim for 12 months whilst Macmillan recruit a new Chief Executive to join in 2023.
Whilst significant Board level HR experience would be ideal, this role may also appeal to a Senior HR Director sat within a larger organisation eager to step into their first CPO position. Both profiles will be of interest. Prior sector experience is not needed, however experience of working in a people centric and change orientated environment will be.
