International Women’s Day: Q&A with Julie Wong

Michelle Jackson International Women's Day

Frazer Jones is proud to be supporting International Women's Day 2019. International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Whilst we all know that gender parity within the workplace has improved over the past decades, we all also know that there is still a long way to go.

We would like to join the discussion and be part of International Women's Day 2019 #BalanceforBetter campaign on the 8th March by interviewing inspiring women we work with and, in particular, understanding the role confidence has played in their career.

We interviewed Julie Wong, Head of Human Resources - Greater China / Vice Chairlady of Diversity and Inclusion Committee, JLL.

How do you define confidence, particularly in the workplace?

Anyone who can share his or her ambitions without hesitation.

Can you give an example of a risk you’ve taken that has paid dividend?

I was given an opportunity to work in Shanghai 12 years ago. It was a tough decision as I knew very little about Mainland China and I had hardly any friends in Shanghai. Shanghai was considered a tier-two market back then too. I am so glad that I made the leap and caught the China fast train. I am amazed at how much Shanghai has developed and I personally have grown with her.

How important is mentoring, coaching and sponsorship in helping women to grow their confidence at work?

Apparently, the answer is ‘very important’!  A good mentor or sponsor will not only provide people with guidance, but also help them build resilience to deal with challenges. To me, sponsorship is needed not only needed in the workplace, it is even more important for a woman to have the right partner, someone who shares similar values and supports her to achieve her ambitions.
